Barcelona revealed – on Sunday – the possibility of taking legal action against the newspaper “El Mundo”, which published the details of Lionel Messi’s contract with the Catalan club.
Barcelona stated that “the club regrets what has been published, given that it is a private document governed by the principle of confidentiality between the two parties.”
The statement added, “Barcelona categorically denies any responsibility for the publication and will take appropriate legal action against El Mundo for any damage that may occur as a result of this.”
El Mundo newspaper published the details of Messi’s contract in its Sunday edition, and revealed the financial value of the 33-year-old’s 4-year-old contract, which was signed in November 2017.
Several Spanish media indicated that Messi, for his part, is also considering suing the Spanish newspaper.
The leaks showed that the contract that Messi signed with former Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, guarantees the Argentine star obtaining more than 555 million euros between 2017 and 2021.
According to estimates published by Spanish newspapers, Messi – who earned more than half a billion euros in 4 years – contributes to Barcelona’s revenue of about 300 million euros annually.
